Most lumber comes from inter mountain west. 30 years ago it would have come from Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Then the spotted owl scam shut down US lumber production. Coincidentally, at that same time the US and Canada signed NAFTA, and apparently spotted owls respect international borders, because at the signing most lumber was imported from British Columbia. When Trump came to power he renegotiated NAFTA, but forgot to keep importing BC lumber, and also didn’t exempt US lumber producers like Boise Cascade from further onerous NEPA compliance.

TL;DR: blame trump and Canadians for stupidity.

NAFTA was renegotiated a few years ago. This happened beginning in the fall of 2020 as far as I know. Politics are involved for sure, but I’m assuming collusion between the mills and suppliers are more of a factor. I can’t get normal plywood reasonably... I gave up trying to get marine grade for my work... it’s damned near as cheap to use Coosa board for the marine trade...
