one thing to remember you shouldnt force a cat to do anything. They kinda dont like it. The best way to get a cat to open up to you is playing with a cat toy, and its stomach (with food). Then once use to you it will open up.. if its a kitten just play time. Sounds silly, but one thing to remember is dont straight "eyeball" them, keep your eyes relaxed, make a little noise here and there, and give them winks. if you sit and try to stare them down , they dont like that.
