Cats are predators. They are designed by nature to be solitary hunter-killers. They are not like dogs, who are pack animals. The best way to a cat's heart is to feed it. Then the cat will regard you as "That putz who gives me food" and will be less likely to slash your hand for no reason. A word of advice. If your cat's tail is puffed up, and it is making a low moaning-growling noise in its throat ... don't try to pick it up. Trust me on this one.
