Address them when they're near. They like being talked to. They usually enjoy scratches under their neck and just above their tail. Play is good for some but there are cats that would rather just hang out while you read or whatever. Guess it really depends what age you're talking about. We took in a drop off and she's older, so she's not so much into play and was not very socialized with humans. It's taken about two months but now she will come lay on my lap when I'm reading. She started by laying next to me on the floor, then touching my foot, then sitting next to me on the couch or bed, gradually increasing how much of her body touched mine. She's a good kitty that needed to establish trust.
