one thing to remember you shouldnt force a cat to do anything. They kinda dont like it.

The best way to get a cat to open up to you is playing with a cat toy, and its stomach (with food). Then once use to you it will open up..

if its a kitten just play time. Sounds silly, but one thing to remember is dont straight "eyeball" them, keep your eyes relaxed, make a little noise here and there, and give them winks. if you sit and try to stare them down , they dont like that.

Address them when they're near. They like being talked to. They usually enjoy scratches under their neck and just above their tail.

Play is good for some but there are cats that would rather just hang out while you read or whatever. Guess it really depends what age you're talking about. We took in a drop off and she's older, so she's not so much into play and was not very socialized with humans. It's taken about two months but now she will come lay on my lap when I'm reading. She started by laying next to me on the floor, then touching my foot, then sitting next to me on the couch or bed, gradually increasing how much of her body touched mine. She's a good kitty that needed to establish trust.

Attention. They're all characters, so same as with people. Before you just impose petting too you should just leave your hand where they can assess and accept it first but that's true of basically all people and animals.

look the cat in the face, blink slowly as you look away. then look back. if the cat does the same thing you've been accepted.

Cats take eye contact as a threat and some don’t like to be baby talked either. But most do. Just be cool and wait until they’re lounging (you won’t have to wait long) and use that time to pet their face, stroke their chin, etc. Show them you’re friendly. Eventually they should sit in your lap sometime while you’re sitting down. Then you know you have their trust and they like you.

Do the slow blink and it calms them.

Sit next to them, looking away from them then start licking your own leg. Extra points if you can do your own butt hole.

Cats are predators. They are designed by nature to be solitary hunter-killers. They are not like dogs, who are pack animals. The best way to a cat's heart is to feed it. Then the cat will regard you as "That putz who gives me food" and will be less likely to slash your hand for no reason.

A word of advice. If your cat's tail is puffed up, and it is making a low moaning-growling noise in its throat ... don't try to pick it up. Trust me on this one.

Slowly, very slowly, blink your eyes while taking slowly to your cat. If you wonder why a cat seems to be squinting at you, it's not that they're giving you a negative look - the stink eye - They slow blink and squint at you to show affection.

Talk to them in a different voice than when you regularly talk. Make your "I'm Talking To You" Kitty-Voice different than your normal voice. It becomes more clear to them when you're addressing them.

Say their name a lot when talking to them. Hi, Mr Kitty. How are you? Does Mr Kitty want something? Is Mr Kitty hungry? I'm going to get a treat for Mr Kitty, because Mr Kitty is a good kitty. It helps them to know that the sound "Mr Kitty" is referring to them in some way. Not that a cat necessarily knows their name, but they know that a certain sound "Mr Kitty" refers to something they should be involved in. It's for them, something about them, related to them, etc.

Slowly pet them on the top of their head with your thumb while you place your hand on the back of their head/neck, and then pet the back of their neck with you fingers. Always slow strokes, no matter where you're petting them. Pet them not like you pet a dog. And when petting them, talk slower and say their name a lot.

Give it attention, this is as simple as talking to it when you first go into the room it is in, then try to get eye contact once you have it hold for lite 2 secs and then slowly blink a few times to let it know you are cool with it.

After that just chilling with it after you make sure it knows You know it is there and are cool with it being there you can get to scratches around the chin/neck, later the back towards the tail.

You will know the cat loves you when it will groom you or press its head into your body, Bonus points if the cat will let you press your head/forehead into its face/head without freaking out.
