If your shooting it in a Kel Tech or Hi Point Carbine, yeah, a 40 will usually ok because the extra size and weight will cushion the recoil. Hipoint even moreso because the stock has a recoil pad built in. Any caliber that is usually shot in a pistol should be ok (Unless your going REALLY big like 454 casul or 500 mag). Just be aware that .40 will be about 50% more expensive than 9mm to shoot.
And yes, 22 LR is 22 long rifle. EVERYONE should own some form of 22LR gun. it's a swiss army knife in so many ways
I'll probably buy 9mm then. Just looking to shoot targets lol
