It was a naturally occuring virus that was transmitted from the civet population. There were never that many confirmed cases.

when you say confirmed cases... we have no confirmed cases of Covid because the virus particle isnt being tested for, just an antibody presence by a +1% false-result test by people who usually take it a few times. with a positive result it does not indicate when the person developed the antibody so quarintine is really uncalled for; its a useless test.

Neil Ferguson of Imperial College put out a similarly scary prediction that was used to justify lockdowns this time round but back then was largely ignored
