Add liver to the mix. Even the freeze dried stuff. Also check out hilarys pet supplement. Use the supplement if you want but they also have good recipes. A good spot to bounce off from. Also turkey is good and you can normally get good cuts for cheap after every holiday you are supposed to cook a turkey for. At Costco for cheap they have dried pumpkin and sweet potato. Can help so you aren't always having to cook potatoes for your dog.
I would add green beans, broccoli, pumpkin, carrots, and coconut oil, the kind that is mostly solid, cold-pressed, unrefined organic. My doggy has a compromised immune system, (yes, vaccine) and my holistic vet approves everything she gets. She also get a pinch of cranberry powder every morning, for kidneys. I've had Poms with kidney problems, I'm being proactive.
Find somebody who you can buy mackerel from. Everybody mentioned already meat raw or cooked (I prefer raw), but what they aren't mentioning is how expensive it is.
Fish is cheap and already includes organs and bones so just give it to them raw. I think it works out to be $3/lb which is 3-4x cheaper then that other meat.
But don't go too long on the same type of meat.. got to mix it up so proteins are not all coming from same animal
Do 3 or 4 proteins
Sweet potatoes are good for dogs. Grains and legumes(beans) are not.
If you want to stretch the meat, some bone meal and sweet potatoes would give vitamins and calcium. Leafy greens are good in moderation as an occasional addition too much can increase chance of kidney stones. Eggs and butter are good for their coat.
No onions. No mangos. No avocados. No legumes.
rice is used in kennels
Rice isn't as good as sweet potatoes. You can use it in moderation but kennels have an incentive to feed the most dogs for the least cost and effort. An individual has to decide what route they wish to take.
Bones And Raw Food, the BARF diet. Chicken is very affordable, often .99/lb at our local (non-chain) store, always available for .69/lb at wallyworld when we make it there. Almost all her meals are frozen, making storage a snap once it get hacked into modest meals. A great benefit is the small size of the shit compared to those poor mutts fed Old Roy garbage. The first year we wanted to make extra sure she got all the essentials, so breakfast was a quality puppy kibble and dinner was meat. And the logs out of that little dog would make a St. Bernard blush. Now this 40# healer/collie craps are just a shade bigger than a cat”s dump. Never had such a healthy, shiny, energetic, aware and intelligent dog in my life. I actually feel guilt for how I raised all my other dogs over my lifetime now that I’ve seen the difference.
I agree that fishies are good for both people and dogs. My dog basically eats dog food and whatever meat that we don't eat. Dumbass did steal a raw chicken nugget off the counter tho. She better not get sick.
yea - sick from the pesticides they put into those slime nuggets
purdue chicken nuggets difinatly make me sick in the gut. could be the canola oil. but everytime i eat them i can tell.
I made 'em from chicken breast, egg, bread crumbs, butter, and stuff.
no such thing as a raw chicken nugget unless you battered it yourself.
That is correct. They were between the battering and the fryer.
amazement and jealousy
yes rice is a good idea. i worked at a kennel and chicken and rice is the go-to for dogs not feeling well.
if your dog is very active then potatoes or rice would be a good adjunct. you could emulate the ratio of many types of dogfoods if you read the packages' assay(proper word usage rhere).
creatine monohydrate could be very good for your dog as they require exogenous creatine for muscle, nerve, brain development. every week for one day a safe(within normal consumption generally) dose of creatine could be added to water(no taste) or a pill. i really think this could make a big difference as studies show the cognitive&physical benifits in people.
beta alanine is another one but you should ask a vet about contraindications. this clears lactic acid and reduces sore muscles.
the soap you use on your dog should be kirks castille and washing soda.. its clean rinsing and will strip dirt well. a little dish soap if your dog is really dirty.
Dinky-Di dog food,mmm mmm good.
Ignore comments, look into BARF.
Raw chicken wing ends - the outboard piece we don't eat. Tastes like real birds!
Ive given my dogs doves after I cleaned them. They LOVE them.
My dad would give our dogs (7) just bones at least twice a week. I think he used brisket bones but it was a long time ago so I'm not 100%. They were hunting dogs (pig hunting) and sheep dogs.
