Most people seem to take it day by day. Some plan for a few months out. Few plan for years. I make plans and then get drunk for long periods and move to day to day.

I'm an anti-plan, anti-goal type guy and it's served me well. It allows me the flexibility to follow what I see as the correct choice as it comes up. The only place I deviated from this was financially. There, a wise old man many, many years ago convinced me of the value of establishing a good retirement plan.

In my case it was investing a portion of my paycheck into a 401k. Smartest thing I ever did and I'd encourage everyone to look ahead and plan for retirement, no matter how young you may be. You guys are gonna live a whole lot more years than I ever will, that's a given. You can't count on things like Social Security and government programs, so invest in yourselves over the years ahead. Increase your contributions to said account as your salary grows. Don't pull that money out for a glitzy new TV or car, it's for your future and that of your family. In the end you'll be happy you saved. And you'd also be surprised how even a tiny sum of money put aside today grows exponentially over time. Just do it!
