My mother's vehicle was broken into. A little emergency cash was stolen, nothing of serious value, but the dumbfuck drops his phone along with a few identifying items, such as his health insurance card. After a quick search I've got his address, as he's a registered sex offender, assault and battery under 14. What to do?

Cops won't do shit but file a report. Just fyi, if you decide to take matters into your own hands, you're already 75% caught by talking about it here, and If you've talked to anyone in person about it you'll likely be snitched on. Tread carefully.

How does that work? Hey Sarge, let's check poal to see who beat up this random sex offender.

I consider it to be a rule of thumb if considering these activities. I could be way off base, but my layman logic is, the fag will report an assault or whatever "crime" against him, and then they'll check the fag's lost phone location and knock on some of OP's neighbor's doors asking general questions. Any mention of a break in or theft mentioned is an easy way to establish motive and anyone with a potential motive would be investigated and the internet history of those with potential motive is likely a first stop. It's what I would do if I were an investigator. We are small fish in a big pond, but we can still be reeled in with ease if not careful.

I suppose that would depend on whether they ping the phone's final location or if they somehow pull location data and see the 24-48 hour stay at the mom's house. Because I would imagine if the phone weren't where it was found, then the officers would not encounter the neighbors and hear about the break in, again according to your theory.
