I can't make up my mind about that one.
Nukes do seem fake and gay. Japan recovered in a few decades from something we're told would take centuries-millenia. But nukes would seem to follow with nuclear energy which is clearly a thing.
I neither believe nor disbelieve and I know how that makes me look but I truly don't care.

You probably don't know the linear exposure model (linear no threshold) is known invalid. Yet it remains steadfast in use. This is likely the origin of your confusion.
What I know is what I've been told. I'm not a nuclear engineer or physicist of any variety who would deal in such areas. But I clearly remember how a nuke would RUIN an area "for generations" due to radiation.
Nothing to do with the explosion (the force, heat, or fire).
Surface contamination is the reason. Which is why dirty bombs are effective.
Surface contamination can be cleaned. This was in fact done at the bikini atoll; what was left anyways.
When residents returned they started dying from cancer. Turns out palm trees, and by extension their nuts, absorb considerable radiation from the soil. This meant all trees would have to be replaced too. The US said we're are not spending the money.
Regardless, if you don't eat indigenous vegetation at bikini atoll, it's now perfectly safe.
But this does confirm a large release of radiation into the environment with a significant loss of land mass.
Gotta figure how quickly japan developed after ending isolation. Destroyed the russian navy in one of the worst naval battles at the turn of the century
