I have been abusing benadryl for a couple years now. I've decided that I'm not using it anymore, but I'm paying the same price I paid which made me begin using it anyway. I've tried early am exercise, cutting caffeine, supplementing magnesium, chamomile and skull cap tea before bed, no electronics before bed. Nothing has seemed to have helped. I've recently learned two other people in my family, an uncle and his son, both have the same issues and also turned to benadryl to get those precious four hours of sleep. Just wondered how common this is.

They don't know what they got.

Abusing Benadryl is better than abusing benzos like I did. I can't take Benadryl, it wires me. But the active ingredient in Sominex doesn't.

You didn't mention exercise, but I'm sure you know all about that aspect. I know it's hard, but it's really better to use nothing if possible, it usually just makes things worse (as I'm sure you know).

Heck, even reading in bed wakes me up, too stimulating. There is some amino acid therapy (works on balancing the brain chemistry) for sleep issues, under a doctor's care, that works, but it's expensive. My doc was treating over 100 insomniacs.

Yes I said early am exercise, that's in addition to a full day running the household. It didn't help other than give me more energy to be quite frank. At one point I was desperate and tried before bed workouts until I was exhausted but my mind just doesn't shut off enough to sleep.

Oh, sorry, didn't even see it. Should have known.

Yes, that's me, everything is stimulating.

My doctor said the brain chemistry is screwed up and the brain is not sending the correct message.
