Had a pedigree GSD, best friend I ever had and the smartest dog I ever owned. Not a dog whisperer but am pretty good at training dogs. I like larger breeds, unfortunately they tend to have shorter life spans. So far I've been leaning towards either a Caucasian or Anatolian shepherd. Anyone have any experience with either of the breeds? Other large breeds with a longer life span that I may not be aware of? Price isn't an issue. I am partial to shepherds.

Depends on the dog. They are definitely going to generally be dominant behavior because they are working/herding dogs. If they have plenty of exercise and sense of a "job" so to speak (my Malinois job is to wear out my other dog. She does a marvelous job of exhausting him every day), they aren't agressive when they shouldn't be. Very good guard dogs and have a good sense of "the regulars" that come by the house. Weird about new people but calms down quickly. Mostly just excessive energy instead of malicious intent. Stella sounds like she wants to kill you, but she's literally so fucking excited to meet another human she can't stop herself from making loud noises.

Thanks for the info bro, I've read up on the breed throughout the last few hours and also found 2 breeders in my state. It really seems like a good match of a dog for me. I do a lot of running and hiking/exploring so the energy level should definitely be compatible.

Congrats, brother. It will be tough to own other dogs from now on. Even shepherds. My girls were both intensely smart. I'm excited for the companionship you're about to have.
