Ships transiting the Suez are required to have a 'pilot' (also when entering and exiting ports) aboard. The pilot is usually an employee of the canal or port authority and is an "expert" in navigating the local area. The ship is required to take directions of speed and course from the pilot, but if anything goes wrong the captain is still responsible.
