That happened to me by some junkie. You don’t really have time to think and you don’t necessarily respond how you think you would. I luckily wasn’t hurt but also wish I had been more aggressive and taught him a better lesson. I did come out on top of the brief struggle at least.
No one knows what they will do in that situation except the handful of brawlers who are used to getting into fights on a regular basis. For the rest of us, it's a learning experience.
I completely agree with this, but would add, that in today's climate, one should take personal responsibility and at least get into a boxing class. Something with real sparring. Aggressive sparring really makes the difference in a random encounter.

Yes, it's important to train yourself to taking punches to the face. Boxing is the best way to do this. If a single punch to the face paralyzes you, then you are fucked.
I used to train boxers. Day One: put them in a proper high guard; hit them in the face/gloves. I can tell pretty what I need to know about how to train you by the way you react to that punch. Best reaction, IMO, is if they step toward you while keeping the guard. That's pretty much the perfect blend of thought under pressure, aggression, and instinct.
That said, there are sometime people who will be better off with just running/retreating. No judgement...that's just how it is.
aggressive sparring
Agree 100%
I’ve had some training in the past, but there was never enough sparring at speed for it to help much in a real life situation. Real fights happen FAST!
