Everyone in Boulder is asking why this shooter would drive 20 miles from his home in Arvada in order to shoot up a grocery store in Boulder.

Without any other explanation the answer is obvious; Colorado is a shall issue conceal carry state, but Boulder is hyper-liberal and there are far fewer gun owners there than the surrounding counties. I believe he, just as the Aurora Theater shooter, chose that location knowing he would have a better chance at getting more victims before being stopped.

This isn't some huge revelation, but the news and politicians don't seem to get it, or just won't admit it publicly because it hurts their gun control narrative.

The ruling didn't stop anything. The court case was about Boulder trying to subvert Colorado law, which they cannot do. He didn't buy the gun in Boulder, it wouldn't have made any difference at all.

It may not have made a difference in the acquisition of the gun, but gun issues are up front in the minds of the citizens. Now they can go "See! See! If we had this ban this wouldn't have happened!" (even though we know it wouldn't have made a difference.)
