Land.

Amen brother

Not even joking. I have a lot of valuable skills and have done a lot of things in my life, but buying a piece of land and developing it into what you envision yourself is the most satisfying, and usually profitable, thing I have ever done. As a matter of fact, I am currently working on a project right now. In the waiting game stage right now. I recently bought several lots in a small town, and everything is riding on what some faggot "Soil Engineers" and the county have to say before I can proceed. This part of the process absolutely SUCKS, but this is the world we live in.

Yeup, I'm looking at 5 acres tomorrow in the country. It's mostly wooded but I plan on knocking down most of the trees (not all) and starting my homestead there.

Good advice? I hire developers, unlike most hiring managers, I look for people who can solve problems, not specific to a particular language. But you'll be faced with hiring managers who will bombard you with silly questions about particular details of a particular technology. It's unlikely you'll fit the position because what ever technology you learn won't be the one the hiring manager wants.

I'd play around with nodeJS to see if you like it. If you do, go for it. I happen to love C++/C# so I'm expert at that. I'd find something you enjoy and become expert in that. The other way is call local recruiters to understand the current demand. They'll be happy to tell you. Keep in mind, technology trends change rapidly.

You'll be with lots of poos.

What job you should get depends on what kind of job you want. For example, if a cushy middle-class pay government job is what you want, COBOL is the way to go.

Embedded firmware. You'll never be out of work.

I'd go for a trade, you'll get paid twice as much and not have to compete with a million Pajeets. A JS developer is unlikely to make more than $60k even in a place like CA. A plumber or electrician in CO can make twice that.

If you are going to go into programming dig deep into DBA, shell scripting and server admin. Those jobs are harder to get but they'll pay more. You'll be competing with the old guys who were pushed out of perl/C/PHP/asp programming by the flood of shitskins, but you might get lucky.

You know, this isn't bad advice. I got a full-stack developer certification; not really trying to get a job in said field, but it's fun and I like that kind of stuff. Was always autistically drawn towards web-development, from an early age. But now that I should be pursuing and realizing these dreams, it seems like the job market is an ever-dwindling race to the bottom. The pay keeps getting lower, and the standards for everything keep going down-hill.

People use fucking APIs and pre-built frameworks for everything. I mean, given enough time and resources: I could (and have, as a class project) build my own facebook clone, from scratch— with more-or-less the same functionality. I made a JS 2D side-scroller, just for the lulz (again: from scratch, no Unity). None of this matters; I already know I'm never going to get the job I want, in this industry.

Instead, I'm now learning a trade— getting paid to learn, and working my way up to a cushy job in an industry which will always be in demand, and is hilariously devoid of FOB immigrants for no other reason than the sheer logistics of it. No pajeet will ever apply for my job because it's actually really physically demanding, and requires years worth of on-the-job learning to get good at. And you'll never learn anything unless you figure out where to get the knowledge, and hope that they're willing to work with you.

My new career is high-paying and safe, and I'll be one of the only people allowed to start this kind of business, when I'm done. And it'll remain that way because all the illegals and H1B's would rather work for tech companies or really any other cubicle desk-job, before even realizing that my profession exists.

H1Bs raped the programming industry into the ground, but the decline was inevitable for the reasons you pointed out. The nature of programming, at least good programming, is that it's reusing well tested code. There were a few years when everyone was trying to get paid to reinvent the wheel, but now it's just a matter of slapping in a turnkey solution. No reason to pay someone $60/hr if all they're doing is installing wordpress.

Tbh, if I could go back (and had the $/foresight), I would immediately go in to physics aiming for a PhD.

Process E-6. Not many around for that anymore.

I came here to say the same thing about Kodachrome. E-6 IS a lot easier, though.

Big Data would be a good choice IMO.

Get into a real compiled language. Everyone and their brother are into scripting languages like javascript and python.
