Personally I am ok with it how it is. As I said, I often want the image label to show in a comment because it is part of a pun, explanation of what the image is, etc.

Without the label, the reader might not get what the image is.
While we are on this topic, I do have one suggestion concerning pic uploads though. When making Posts, I have a heck of a time getting dragged images to get accepted, they almost always just pop up in the browser instead of being accepted in the "Image: Choose file" box. I have tried every way I can as far as aligning the drag with the box, and it is really finicky. Not sure how this would be corrected, I am supposing it would mean enlarging the target box area or something.
When you drag the image over the "Choose file" button, it should change its color to let you know you can drop it.
I just tried it, and I am not seeing a color change, regardless of whether the image is accepted or not. Is it possible that this is on my end- browser maybe? Brave browser, Ubuntu OS for reference.
Try another browser, just to make sure it isn't Brave that is trolling you.
