I did 500 miles of the AT a few decades ago and it was super safe. There was a community of hikers that you basically kept pace with and would share meals and stories with whenever you met up. I'm assuming things are similar now because most of the trouble makers don't know about the AT and won't go through the trouble to hike days into the woods to get someone.

you don't need to hike to get someone... the trail crosses over roads and goes into towns

Ever see blacks walk more than 10 miles on a trail? doubt it!

Bear mace and sure, a gun would be useful (albeit it adds weight)

Also there's so many of these channels, with various upload timings (best if ya wait a week, if you're security concerned)

Biggest risk really is depletion of food/water, since people aren't really down to drink their own piss. overexertion for the untrained, being relatively stranded if injured, weather unpreparedness (getting soaked and not being able to dry off can be damaging), getting to cold and also damaging yourself. Depletion of cash-on-hand, loss of a phone or wallet can end things
