Depends on what you mean by universal. There might be alien species that can eat rocks or something. Plants don't necessarily need anything else to die but they do generally prevent other smaller plants around them from thriving. As for humans, we are animals and thus have to eat other living things to survive. Even vegans can't get away from that.
