Depends on what you mean by universal. There might be alien species that can eat rocks or something. Plants don't necessarily need anything else to die but they do generally prevent other smaller plants around them from thriving.

As for humans, we are animals and thus have to eat other living things to survive. Even vegans can't get away from that.

If you want help from the spirits, you need to give them something. As it says in the ancient Hávamál, "A gift demands a gift." The things that feed spirits are emotions such as fear and love, and on a more visceral level, semen and blood. This is why Aleister Crowley and others were so keen on sex magic, and why it is so popular today. A. O. Spare practiced sex magic to empower his talismans. The succubi, the lamia, feed on this energy.

The most potent gift is a gift of blood, yours or someone else's, which is why the god of the ancient Hebrews, the Jealous God of the Mountain who made a black pact with Moses and his tribe, demanded blood sacrifices. Animal sacrifices were given to this god daily by the priests. It is very, very likely that human sacrifices were also given, as the story of the binding of Isaac indicates. The message you should take away from that little biblical tale is not that the mountain god was merciful, in sparing the life of Isaac when his father was willing to sacrifice the boy to the god, but that the god expected that the lives of children should be sacrificed for his engorgement.

The sacrifice of living prisoners by the Druids was observed by the Romans when they came to Britain, and the Aztec routinely had festivals of blood slaughter, sacrificing dozens or hundreds on their pyramids, among them small children. Even today, there is rumor that the Jews kidnap and sacrifice Christian children in order to obtain their blood.

"Blood is the life," as it says in the Good Book, and vampires will repeat the words. There is meaning in the myth of the vampire. Blood is the seat of life, esoterically speaking. Spirit (spiritus) is in the breath, and the blood carries the essence of the breath to renew and feed all parts of the body via the circulatory system. Blood is the life of the body.
