I have mixed feelings on it. It's great that somehow Voat will continue to be out there. And seems they will hire Justin full time along with other staff. That's all great stuff.

What concerns me is it seems every time something gets bought, then it needs to generate a profit. Merch and all that is great, but we all know that with sites like voat, reddit or whatever, the "product" is the users.

In my opinion they would not knowingly or willingly just sell voat down the river, but I imagine things will change in the very near future after the honeymoon ends, when the bean counters see they are bleeding cash to server costs and staff with merch not covering it.

Glad set this up when he did. I wonder if only smaller sites like this can truly be free, born out of love with no real driving push for ROI or profit?

I read the post, and the first thing I thought was "Everyone is going to be very happy Poal exists soon".

If it works out for them, great, but I have a feeling this is the beginning of the end of Voat.

I've been thinking on your comment. I wonder if, since most voaters seem to be reddit refugees of one sort or another, will they just stick it out until it gets intolerable vs. bolting at the first signs of free speech limitation? I am leaning towards the former.

I doubt any of the Qoomers will ever realize if it starts going south. They'll probably ride the horse to the grave, and they'll be the only ones keeping the site alive after a while. They're probably the only reason for the angel in the first place.

Edit: Spelling mistake

Also for keeping the site alive, I don't see the /v/aww sliders (sbbh/sdbh sub group) leaving anytime soon (you know poalsucks / ethuggin etc). They have too much fun fucking with people and manipulating things. It still gets me, that anyone with enough time to just fuck with an internet site for lulz, is just beyond wasting their life. It's not like hacking where are you learning hardcore shit as you try to find a vulnerability. It is posting hamster pics to get fake internet points and some sort of power or influence or "lookz whatz I dun" factor. Just about one of the most useless pursuits I could imagine.

Justin commented that it was a long time user or someone involved with the site who was the angel. The Q folks are pretty new, so doubt it's them. I see the Q folks mostly staying in their 3 subs and not really causing much trouble. So yeah, I think if those subverses are left alone they would stay, but Q themselves would know if / when Voat is comped and push another migration.

That's what should have happened a few years ago, I wonder how much of their income Atko and Putt was spent on this website.

What concerns me is it seems every time something gets bought, then it needs to generate a profit.

Not at the start. First it needs users, then there will be ads or premium. But they usually get bought again (sometimes several times) before there is profit.

I wonder if only smaller sites like this can truly be free, born out of love with no real driving push for ROI or profit?

Yes, if it's small enough to run as a "hobby" it can be free; when you need investors, they want something back.

Made me sad and glad at the same time. Sad because I do believe it’s a sell out and glad because the user base has gone significantly down hill as far as shills and retards go, so good riddance. I love the small town feel here and the intellectual discourse. I recently tried posting some opposing view points there after many months away, and all I got in return were infantile insults. Sad.

I suspect that you are right, and voat will be all about ROI very soon. That will never happen here. This place will always be free speech first.

Remember what happened to slashdot, digg, 4chan, reddit when they did that.

History seems to inevitably repeat itself.

I hope I’m wrong and Justin is not gonna cash in and sit there and watch the greedy “angels” milk and ruin it like they all previously did for the above mentioned places.

I felt that coming at some point but I had to leave for other reasons. It's mostly a shit show over there these days.

Yes exactly what I was thinking.

Wasn't part of the problem that Voat couldn't process payment from anyone? How can they sell anything?

[–] 5 pts

Maybe they'll be selling votes for bitcoins?

I still don't have a parking spot.

The Voat of today is no longer the Voat of even a year or two back, so I'm not sure injecting cash will change it in any way. The post was also very short on details, other than to announce that Putt now has a full time job and a small staff. Only time will tell what that means for Voat's future. But to me, Putt lost control of that place a good spell back and reining it in and making it relevant again for anything beyond the toxic waste dump it's become will be difficult. Maybe it's just me, but seeing how it's devolved gives me no interest in returning.

The "New" Putt we've had for three years or so has been consistently sparse on any details at all. Voat's transparency is so awful it might as well be a smoke screen.

[–] 1 pt

Absolutely true. And the way Voat's changed since atko moved on is unmistakable. Putt ran it into the ground.

[–] [deleted] 5 pts

IDK yet. He said the investor is there for a long time. Maybe the new guy is a co-owner. Maybe nothing horrible will happen. But we know how reddit changed along the years. Money"s a bitch. So, I really don't know.

Maybe it's George Soros disguised as a human.

VOAT is Compromised & Putt is a Shill. Putt rejected all forms of offering of funding & structure of funding from the community, every time there was a major event Voat mysteriously gets shut down, now suddenly accepts an Unknown primary source.

Voat is a Glow in the Dark Honeypot.

Putt is a Shill. https://i.postimg.cc/3rbNgng7/image.jpg
