I don’t want government involved in my marriage. Happy to take a bow before God and let that be enough. What are the legalities of marriage that make it beneficial?

bow before God is what I did and nothing else. So now, on paper, she's a single mom and gets a huge tax return. I, on the the hand, owe a couple bucks. Her return more than makes up for it.

Fortunately we both have health insurance from our jobs, but if one of us didn't that's the only reason I would see a reason to get the government involved.

Early in our marriage (40+) we talked about divorce simply for this reason/the taxes were killing us! We didn’t divorce, but as a couple I feel it is another layer of commitment and removes government from issues in sickness or death.
