My boss seems to think that weekends and a few selected federal holidays are enough when it comes to time off , so unfortunately, there will be no vacation for me in the foreseeable future. Even if I call out sick, my boss expects me to work remotely while "sick", so I couldn't even fake a week of illness to get out of work in order to sneak away for a vacation. I haven't had vacation time in two years, and I feel like I need one so bad.
If I could vacation though, I would look into planning a local or neighboring state road trip, stopping off at the beaten path types of destinations (camp sites, natural springs, fishing, etc.) I don't think I have the stomach for touristy places with tons of people these days anyway. If you keep it simple, you get to relax, and avoid having to provide any sort of "papers".
If you've been working at that job for 2 years then it's time to apply for a job with a competitor that will give you better pay/benefits.
I agree, and normally I would move on. The only thing that has been keeping me there is experience with having the title I have. Education wise, I have the equivocal of a bachelors in credit hours, but never completed a degree (long story). It kills me to stay because I was promised 4% contribution to a 401K and full paid for insurance, and they haven't made good on it, but it's an easy job, and to be fair, they've treated me nicely - I get generous bonuses for my birthday, and the holidays. I've worked really hard to move up title wise, and the job has an expiration date - as soon as the boss retires in about 4 years. Considering my background, I feel lucky to have the job. It's really hard to get a decent paying job without an official degree, and the commensurable work experience in my line of work (financial sector office management).
The job I have sucks though, because there is literally no one who can cover me if I call out sick, or want to take a vacation. I'm not only the operations manager, but I am also the executive assistant to the president of the company so I am always working hard, and there is no telling what I will be doing day to day on top of normal duties. My boss's personality is literally that of a cartoon character with ADD, and has multiple business interests that I often have to assist with.
However, I figure that if I tough it out for a few more years, I can move into a similar job with a bit less responsibility making about 20k more a year. I am literally counting down the days, and have to often remind myself of the end game reward.
