Go with a bow. The reload time of a crossbow is unreasonable unless that small about of precision is that crucial. I do competitive traditional archery and a bow is a great home defense weapon due to not exposing yourself to blinding flashes that ruin your night vision our loud shots that can deafen or disorient you. They're quite, accurate and effective.

what would you recommend for long lasting bows? compound or not? what about take down force or a bow compared to a crossbow?

Compounds are more powerful and precise, traditional bows are just wood and a string so all the work is in his the bow is shaped (and material of course). I don't know much about crossbows but I'd imagine they're the most powerful out of them all. They're just not as easy to use as a bow you can keep 3 or 4 shots at the ready. But if you know how to use a bow you won't need much more power. You'll get the job done.

Learn to make one. It's not complicated. Get a sharp knife and hatchet, cut down a hatchet sapling, and cut off everything that isn't a bow. It won't be beautiful, but done right it can take small game.

Look at survival guns. Do you want to actually survive, or larp as robin hood? I do shoot compound bows, thats how i hunt deer. Because the best area to hunt where i live is archery only after october. In an actual survival scenario my bows can go fuck themselves, guns are way better. You can only carry so much survival shit. Ill be carrying guns if shit gets real. Rational priorities.

All that said, im not saying you shouldnt get archery tackle. Its fun and is a good tool for hunting depending on where you live. But a bow aint what im grabbing if shtf.

The problem there though could be that guns are loud which may be a real issue in a post breakdown society. Bows and crossbows are stealthy. A combination of both sound good

They are superior to standard bow and arrow in almost every way. Much quieter then a gun. The ammunition is reusable most of the time. Limited range compared to a gun. More difficult to fabricate then a gun. Idk about 3d printed crossbows. This is all hearsay and logic. I am no crossbow expert, but my forearms are now bent from using a traditional bow and arrow for 40 years.

Had a dumbass friend in high school that while cocking the crossbow, had his foot in the foot ring (what ever it’s called) -the where you place your foot to hold it as you draw the string back- accidentally discharged the arrow with a broad tip and damned near sliced off his big toe and the one next to it... they were dangling by skin.

He didn’t know he did it for a few minutes until he felt that his boots were wet, and then the pain hit...

Same dumbass tried to shoot half an arrow through a compound bow and sent it up through his wrist a couple years later....
