Live in a state where they plow and salt the roads. If that's not a possibility, snow tires or chains. If no those, be sure you have new tires and let a bit of air out for some traction. Don't go on the highway with underinflated tires, stick to 35mph or lower. If the speed limit on the road you're going on is 45 or 55, fuck it, stick to 35mph and put your flashers on. Be hyper aware of other drivers, as they'll likely be really dangerous to you. Go slower than you think you need to. Don't go up or down hills, stick to flat or nearly flat. If you must go up a hill, try to get more speed because you don't want to stall and slip down. Bring a bag of salt and a bag of sand so that when you ignore my advice and get stuck you can unstick yourself. Edit- Kitty litter also works, but not as well as salt
Also break waaay before you think you need to.
Edit 2- also try practicing in your neighborhood, or a parking lot or some other place where you're unlikely to really fuck up your car.
