From a guy named Thomas Smith. I have his discharge papers, the ribbon of the unit he was in and letters of recommendation. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh (en.wikipedia.org). He was an officer in the 49th Ohio volunteer infantry and after he was wounded he was discharged on July 23, 1862 from Columbus, Ohio. Who would I take this to to have the stuff appraised? They have a museum there, but they are non-profit. I was just going to donate the stuff, but my elderly neighbor who is a vet told me I could be holding a good chunk of money.

So, Poal, any ideas?

I have the paper work from the time he was discharged to the time of his death. It's pretty interesting. After he was done in the Army he became a prison guard in Toledo. I have his obit and all that stuff. Here (archive.org) is his service info on the war.

Also, thanks for the reply.
