There is scientific discussion that during solar micro nova events the Earth's mantel is heated such that the magma becomes more slippery, an increase of plasticity, which causes the continents to slip around somewhat on the surface. Radical changes in the positions of the continents are possible during the duration of the cataclysm. Even if the continents stay roughly relative to each other, there is no guarantee that combined they will continue to spin in the same direction evenly, they could just as easily spin off the central axis until the magma cools and locks them into their new positions. During this time the oceans continue to move at the current speed of the planet, spilling over the top of large land masses, also possibly changing their direction and drag. Such a thing would, of course, also radically change the prevailing local weather patterns of the lower altitudes of the planet. This means it is entirely possible that Antarctica was not always located at the South Pole. It could have existed in much warmer climes prior to the last ice age, just as the current North pole land area may not have always been that far North.
