The impeachment happened on January 13th, while Trump was still in office. Impeach simply means "to accuse." It's essentially the same as an indictment in a regular court (i.e. the prosecution formally stating charges and their intent to hold a trial).
What happened just the other day was the end of the actual trial, where the Senate voted to acquit.
So no super-sekrit Qoomer qonspiracy going on here. They were simply having the trial for the impeachment that happened while he was still President. And since he's out of office, the worst they could do is bar him from ever holding an elected position again, and that's what this is all about. Now that he's out, they don't want him coming back in any capacity.
The Democrats are scared shitless that Trump will run again, because they know he will win AGAIN, and they will have to cheat AGAIN in order to cling to the power they so desperately seem to need. They know the people of America rejected them in this past election. That's why there are thousands of troops in DC.
