Yes, but those dumb bitches are using the verb definition and not the noun definition. All diets (verb) fail, but changing your diet (noun) works. And that ties into the rest of your post about willpower.
I suspect most diets actually work, if you work them....as opposed to pretending to. And that's the catch. Playing 'let's pretend' that chocolate cake, that box of fried chicken, that pizza, etc., was actually on the diet is where most diets fail....wonder why? Duh!
No, because the concept of going on a diet implies it has an end date. That's why I say you shouldn't go on a diet, but change your diet. I've eliminated things like soda, fast food and lots of processed foods from my life. I've changed my diet and found it to be more effective than trying all the various diets that are out there.
The implication that there's an end date are part of the reason why so many people fail at dieting and then gain the weight back and add more weight. It's why Oprah would balloon after dieting, she'd hit her goal and then go back to how she ate before, gain it all back and put on more.
The online dictionary does not agree (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diet), and this is the mistake most landwhales make, thinking that once the targeted amount of weight is lost, they can ditch the diet, and eat what they want (the very idiocy that turned them obese), or start 'cheating' on the diet. There are those that eat to live, and them that live to eat, and the latter has a problem with food, similar to alcoholics with booze....for such people there is no end to the diet, nor end to abstinence from alcohol. Of course, the true cure to any such addiction is simply to develop an Iron Will, but that is a slow and arduous process that most would rather volunteer for 'watedboarding', than deign to undertake.
The problem is not with the diet, as most diets do work. The problem is that stupid creatures (like Oprah) are wholly lacking in enough intelligence to pick a diet they can live with for the rest of their lives, instead, choosing one they can tolerate only until the goal is reached, then it's time to celebrate with a feast every day til they once again become landwhales....then its time to whine that yet another diet was tried and proved useless, so on to the next diet. In the end, diets are simply eating regimens for them that cannot plan their own meals (without turning into a blubberbot), yet cannot afford a dietician to do it professionally.
