Bone conducting like aeropex are the best so you can maintain situational awareness. I've used them for a couple of years with no problems.

I have a pair of AfterShockz "Trekz" Bone Conduction and they're awesome. They don't work with the lawn mower so I also have noise cancelling over-the-ear.

I prefer the "good enough". I don't produce music or anything. I had a pair of Sennheiser I got for around 50 that was happy with but the dog destroyed them.

I use over the ear. I got a pair of Sennheiser's years ago for around 75% off the retail price, and I'm still using them. The fuzzy ear cups are getting a little worn, but they still work great.
