Made in America and the best customer service I have seen in a long time. A while back one of mine lost a screw and they sent me a full set of hardware no questions asked, no cost to me, not even shipping.
Their 420HC blades are very affordable and very nice. The Kershaws you see at WalMart are 8Cr13MoV steel which is very serviceable but for only a few bucks more the 420HC is much nicer.

Get a full tang. I like Cold Steel for having cool mall ninja shit that's cheap but also takes a beating. I've had a few of their Tantos.
If you want something retarded, get the Spyderco Civilian. Unfortunately I never got to use that knife properly.

I wouldn't spend a fortune on a brand-name knife. They aren't worth it. When they cost hundreds of dollars, you don't want to actually use the fucking thing for fear of losing it or breaking it. What use is that?
I would get a lockblade knife with a 3 1/2 blade, no belt clip, one that has screws that can be tightened and adjusted (avoid like the plague a knife with rivets instead of hex screw heads).
Plain blade, not serrated, because you will need to sharpen it.
Tool steel if you can find it, but most now are made of stainless, which won't hold an edge as well (unless you pay hundreds of dollars).
Assisted-opening for one-handed convenience (sure, you can learn to flick a non-assisted blade open with one hand, but why bother when you can get opening-assisted for no extra cost?).
Total Cost: around $20 or so. That's a knife you can actually use daily, without worrying about chipping the point or breaking the pivot.
