The electron microscope used in these labs are incapable of seeing a 'live' virus. Other science articles use the word 'live' to describe viruses as well. For example, the recently invented "microsphere nanoscope" (nanoscope) can see live viruses for the first time. Electron tomography is an extension of traditional transmission electron microscopy and uses a transmission electron microscope to collect the data.
