How did Yahoo and AskJeeves make a functional search engine in the 90's, but in 2021 nobody can create a search engine that doesn't basically query and copy Google and Bing?

I've used Startpage, DuckDuckGo, Qwant, Gibiru, etc. - all of them are either shit or they just search Google/Bing on the backend and present you with the results for "privacy."

Why is it so nearly impossible for an independent company to put together their own search engine similar to Yahoo in the 90's? Hell, I would gladly take 1990's Yahoo technology today over the bells and whistles of propaganda Google and Bing today.

I just searched vaccine deaths on DuckDuckGo and it's nothing but "FACT CHECK" bullshit at the top. DuckDuckGo is absolute shit. What are the real alternatives? Are they all being murdered when they try to start up a search engine?

At this point Yandex seems to be the only search that isn't biased about US politics. But c'mon, we shouldn't have to use Kremlin search to be able to search the internet.

The DoJ is responsible for anti-trust cases, but it's mostly just a bribery system, or a political tool. There are probably a dozen+ anti-trust cases in the courts, but magically all of our major monopolies aren't being targeted. Werid that Trump had four years and big tech and big media didn't get touched that entire time. They all attacked him, yet he did nothing to break up their obvious monopolies and constant mergers/acquisitions. Weird...

Most of the other competitors use the same "authoritative sources" algorithms as jewgle so they get similar results. OP is remembering with rose colored glasses the days when you'd search "big boob" and get a geocities page about how the holohoax is fake. Now they all weigh authoritative sources higher, who are authoritative sources? Well, .gov, .edu and .lügenpresse domains of course. Now because wikipedia is the authority on everything they always show up first. But lets be honost on anything non-political, such as bird migration patterns, you're going to get better info from kikepedia than from hotgaysex666.blogspot.com

Yahoo and Askjeeves worked quite well for the time, also Lycos, Hotbot, Altavista and so on. The main reason why Google works so well today (as they did in 2000) is that they defend against search engine spam (sometimes called SEO) which made search engines basically useless when they were manipulated like fuck. Google does that very well, Bing isn't bad either. Duckduckgo is ok, but is not a very good search engine. There are other attempts at doing it, but this is like saying why does nobody make a drink that beats Coca Cola after a week, this just does not work.

Yandex is quite ok, but is based in russia, Chinese search engines do not work well for English text, there are no alternatives.

I too would go back to vintage Yahoo over this. Another example of the 1990s being infinitely superior to modern times, something that no one in the 1990s would have believed possible.
