There weren't any horses to ride. Horses didn't exist in North or South America until Europeans introduced them.

Horses are actually from North America but went extinct and were reintroduced by Europeans. Side note, camels were also indigenous to North America.

There was a horse but it was all dinky and useless. Like everything else, Europeans made it better. (Although probably Asians first in this case.)
