If 1000 years from now there are only 100 bitcoins remaining in circulation because the rest have all been lost over time, then the entire world's economy could still run on it, they could just be transacting in 0.0000000000000001 bitcoins. They'd likely at some point just move the decimal. 1 mBTC or something would be a millionth of a bitcoin.
