You can do either or, or both. For my primary email, I have my own domain like you said, but use Gmail as the client tool. I may think about self-hosting although really don't feel like running my own email server, and I just like Gmail's ecosystem, UI/UX, and overall functionality for my every day blocking and tackling. I use Microsoft's ecosystem for work. I also use Protonmail for places like Poal and other sites that I don't want Google spying on.
Agree. The key, as you said, is to own the domain. If I decide to give up on Google, I can easily switch to Protonmail and none of my contacts knows any differently.
This of course requires the domain registrar to not drop you, as is happening lately. I will probably switch my registrar to Epik sometime soon.
Is that the same one parler just swapped to?
