i used fastmail in the past and it was fine, but i switched to runbox (runbox.com) which is also very good IMO

i would readily advise against self-hosting unless you are very comfortable with all the intricacies of running a mail server - it's not for the faint of heart

Protonmail or selfhosted.

I use a service called Fastmail. Been very dependable and fast as advertised. Paid service but it isn't much.

Self hosting is fun. Because you can if you got the domain. You can have the email <joe@mamaa.com> and its fun to tell the retail clerk for emailed receipt. Its the little things in life...

You can do either or, or both. For my primary email, I have my own domain like you said, but use Gmail as the client tool. I may think about self-hosting although really don't feel like running my own email server, and I just like Gmail's ecosystem, UI/UX, and overall functionality for my every day blocking and tackling. I use Microsoft's ecosystem for work. I also use Protonmail for places like Poal and other sites that I don't want Google spying on.

Such a fickle thing this tech.

Agree. The key, as you said, is to own the domain. If I decide to give up on Google, I can easily switch to Protonmail and none of my contacts knows any differently.

This of course requires the domain registrar to not drop you, as is happening lately. I will probably switch my registrar to Epik sometime soon.

mail.com for mainstream stuff and protonmail or tutanota for tinfoil hat stuff
