  1. Does it make any difference how long the engine has been off? Should I always check it, say, 5 min after turning the engine off?

  2. Does flatness matter? If I'm parked on an incline will that affect it? should I always check it on level ground?

Yes & yes. Pull the dipstick after 5mins. WIPE clean. Insert remove & check. Give it a sniff too. Flatter is better. Especially bigger engines that have a sump well in the oilpan
