Making a decision on my first rifle and have it narrowed down to these 2.

I'm leaning toward the Rugar but I really like the reliability Springfield is known for.

Yes I know good luck finding them but when I do I am buying it.

I would like to mention that I am a beginner but not a novice when it comes to firearms. I have shot plenty of times and have been trained in gun safety, but never owned my own.

Thanks for anyone taking the time to answer.

The M1 is a quality 308 rifle. Heavier, more recoil, but a reliable rifle. Can do double duty as a scoped hunting rifle for larger game.

Ruger (newer one) is great, but if you are getting an older one you can address some of the issues the platform had with aftermarket parts. But, they are available in a wide range of calibers, most of which are commonly available and are AR15 common as well. So, if you think you may be in a situation where you are sharing ammo... It's a good choice, but avoid the unusual chamberings or you lose this advantage. Nothing wrong with 223.

But, both are good choices. Just depends what you're looking for. Also - how large you are and if you plan to carry it for any length of time. (Factoring a combat load of 308 vs 223, for example, as well as the companion mags. A lot of M1 mags are steel, etc.)
