According to jewish tradition, he's not jewish. Jewish claim requires jewish mother; as with Canaanites. A claim to jewishness here is suspect.
Aside from that, there really isn't enough information there. Frequently there are highly correlated factors which drive these type things. For example, I know chess was frequently pushed in judeo-communist countries, like Russia, which is specifically mentioned. This would tend to self select both players and those allowed to compete. But there are many other factors of which I have no clue.
Regardless, I think it's safe to say were taking about ashkenazi. Which is european genetics with semetic and other admixture.
