I remember it was in the children's "world of technology" type books and in documentaries - always such a marvel of the pinnacle of engineering.

As I grew older and saw nothing developed to replace it, or surpass it... then its eventual retirement... it may have been one of the first big letdowns by "the adults in charge of the world" that I experienced.

At least some part of my optimism for the future died with that news. Now when we muse about how we should have been walking among the stars by now instead of in a malaise of third-worldness, that's what I think back on.
