I think it is being driven by attempts to provide a consistent experience between devices from wearables up to pc. 3d or shaded logos just get lost on smaller screens or favicons. As long as the trend is toward smaller devices and ui's this will remain. Perhaps if something like augmented reality such as google glass takes off this will flip on its head, who will want a flat logo when you could have a moving 3d experience?
