Really just get yourself some traps and a bag of friskies. I used to feed my barn cats and the skunks raided my barn daily. Theyre whores for cat food.
i have several acres. the dogs jobs are to keep bad critters away from my edible, raised and fed critters. I do not want to stay up all night on the off chance there might be a skunk to kill. If i try to trap it, one of my dumb ass chickens will probably get trapped first. To me, washing the dog is the best choice.
Skunks are most active at night and dusk / dawn, which is when your chickens will be in the coop. Easy enough to have the cage door shut while your chickens are out and about, but have the trap set while the chickens are in the roist and the skunks are prowling. Really, its an easy solution.
