So tired of these sorts of questions from those who think they can just stick a couple bags of beans and some ammo in a closet and be ready for what's coming. Long term survival isn't found in stockpiling items like you own a warehouse, and even then that just makes you a target. Stockpiles are only for short-term incidents. You can't just buy your way out when it comes to long term survival. Long term survival is found in knowledge, and preparation. It's far too late to bug out to the mountains when SHTF, as you are not likely to make it there, and those who live there aren't going to be very tolerant of you.
Learn to garden, learn skills, make friends with your neighbors and work with them for the betterment of the group. Real long term survival is much more "Little House on the Prairie" than "Day Z". Those who think they will just stock up on guns and ammo and take what they want from others will be the first to go, followed by those who think they will just buy their way out of trouble not too long after.
Do you know how to grow a garden, butcher an animal, can food, purify drinking water, basic sanitation? The list goes on. How about advanced long term sanitation? Do you know how to build and maintain an outhouse? Drill a well? Do you even have a hand pump to run that well when there is no power? What's the nearest water source to you? How is it contaminated? These days it's not a matter of if, but what. What happens if someone gets sick or injured? Do you have a skill that you can use for trade when there is no power or other modern conveniences, like blacksmithing, hand woodworking/carpentry, natural medicine, etc.?
Take a look at real disasters, and learn from them. When the power goes out, the first thing to disappear is gasoline. The gas pumps don't work now, all those people who thought they'd just get by on a generator now can't fuel it after day 3, or even sooner, with only a few rare people who had extras gas for whatever reason going beyond that. What fuel is left goes to the government, along with any resupply. Generators are noisy, too, so now who is going to be a target for looters and other degenerates, or the desperate?
Just going to bug out? Sorry, the first thing the government does when SHTF is to lock down all travel. No one goes in or out. Get caught with any sort of firearm at a checkpoint, guess what happens. Let alone all those stocks of valuable supplies, they'll get taken from you at gunpoint "on behalf of the people". Or you'll be accused of being a looter, and worse will happen. If by some miracle you do manage to escape the nightmare zone (NZ), now what? The people in the outlying areas are on full alert, and having already dealt with the looters and degenerates coming out of the NZ, aren't going to want you around either. They don't know you, and they don't trust you, and rightly so. How much gas do you have? Can you get more? (Not likely) Guess what! There will be a secondary set of roadblocks and checkpoints about 5 to 10 miles outside the NZ to catch people like you, and prevent movement into the NZ. Here we go again......
That's just for a localized natural or other disaster. What do you do when the whole country is the NZ? We are currently on the verge of a communist seizure of power and unorganized Balkans style civil war. All patriots will be forced to live as outlaws, and the whole country could be a war zone. Good luck with your bag of beans.
Good luck hunting and butchering your own food and growing your own crops.
Thanks, but it's over 50 years of living in the back woods and being self-sufficient. It's knowledge, skill, and experience, not luck.
A few check point officers accidentally get holes in them they'll run out of volunteers for check points right quick
