Censorship seems to work well in Germany and China.

Yes, there is the streisand effect. But censorship will be perceived differently if it's allegedly done for the sake of science (fact checking) or moral decency (anti-hate laws).

Besides, telling you that censorship doesn't work, just like telling you that violence doesn't work, is one way to make you more docile.

I can attest to that. Germany has stifled any kind of open discussion of the 6 gorrillion very successfully. Our courts routinely sentence old people to jail for years, twice or three times in a row. As soon as they are out, they are already defendants of their next trial. The general public doesn't notice or doesn't care.
