If you havent considered it yet, it will be easier to barter gram gold bars then an entire ounce when the fan goes brrrr. No right or wrong, but for ease of trade/barter, look into gram bars.

Been thinking about this lately and I can't understand in a SHTF situation how precious metals would ever be better than ammo or liquor. Those are tradable in smaller quantities too.

Truth.

People tend to forget that "round" was used as a bartering tool , for gold diggers who hadn't hit (found anything) they could exchange a round of ammo for a small glass of whiskey.

More people should barter and exchange without using the debt slips. I do it all the time with my neighbors (they all grow various fruits/vegetables as do I) I haven't bought a single pear, apple, or plum in 30 years. We have 5 tier shelving units in the basement that are full of preserves and jellies. (among other things). We always save the seeds and dry them out , plant indoors, and then give the seedlings back to our neighbors in the springtime. Its more fun than watching the idiot box or staring at a "device" not to mention you save a fortune.

(also, we do this for flowers as well. I find it sad that so many people just throw away so many flowers when they've "died" …I started my landscaping using seeds form the compost people just dumped. What they pay 18 bucks a basket for , I pay nothing and I never do :)

Do you use wax on top of your preserves and jellies or is canning good enough?

If you need to pick up and move, carrying 5 gold American Eagles is easier than trying to carry 10,000 rounds of 5.56. Furthermore, if Canada is the destination, the gold is legal, ammo, unsure. Same situation with booze. They want to see tax stamps. Best to have some of all and be prepared to move the direction the wind is blowing even if that means leaving some things behind.

True. If I’m picking up and leaving like that though then things are pretty bad. I can’t imagine being in a more ill prepared position than that.

In a barter(survival) situation you are 100% right. People will want corn/grain/medicine/liquor/ammo/etc loong before they want some worthless metal.

Point of metals is, if there is by some crazy chance still an active government, people will use those who are still in that normal/gov system access to trade what they covet (gold/diamonds/silver/riches) for things normal people will desire (food/clothing/tools/drugs).

Those thinking metals will "preserve" their lives will gladly barter for actual life sustaining materials they still have access too for some shiny coins/bars.

All depends how its gonna go down and with whom. In the bush, actual supplies. In the cities and suburbs, metals arent exactly an unwise store.

Also, if you had to be mobile you wouldn't be taking 500# of grain. Moving ammo boxes one room over sucks, I'd hate to relocate too much.

Also, be very careful with guns and ammo if you take them fishing with you.

You can only stack so much water, food, ammo, etc. Beyond that, there are assets like real estate, stocks, precious metals, always-declining fiat currency, etc.
