In a barter(survival) situation you are 100% right. People will want corn/grain/medicine/liquor/ammo/etc loong before they want some worthless metal.

Point of metals is, if there is by some crazy chance still an active government, people will use those who are still in that normal/gov system access to trade what they covet (gold/diamonds/silver/riches) for things normal people will desire (food/clothing/tools/drugs).

Those thinking metals will "preserve" their lives will gladly barter for actual life sustaining materials they still have access too for some shiny coins/bars.

All depends how its gonna go down and with whom. In the bush, actual supplies. In the cities and suburbs, metals arent exactly an unwise store.

Also, if you had to be mobile you wouldn't be taking 500# of grain. Moving ammo boxes one room over sucks, I'd hate to relocate too much.

Also, be very careful with guns and ammo if you take them fishing with you.

Very common to lose them all in a boating accident.

You can only stack so much water, food, ammo, etc. Beyond that, there are assets like real estate, stocks, precious metals, always-declining fiat currency, etc.
