Can't there be a setting for downvoats on or downvoats off?
Let users do whatever they want and for those who don't like downvoats they will get a different sort algorithm.
Just like all, new, popular etc sort the same content differently it can be the same with downvoats as the leading variable. Sort popular by upvoats and for those who don't like downvoats and sort by upvoats-downvoats for normal people.
Now talk amongst yourselves and figure it out, but no downvotes is gay.
