You're overthinking the concept. Downvotes are a pussy way out of direct confrontation or an argument. They allow people to circumvent any sort of discourse or challenge in favour of suppressing dissenting opinions without any recourse.
They're for extremely cowardly people and no one else.
we don't have time to argue on every single post we ever read. that's why there are also upvotes. why would I tell everyone something is worth reading? sjhouldn't they read everything on the site to see what they like? it's exactly the same in reverse.
I wouldn't care if they removed upvotes as well just like 4chan. Have optional filters for traffic, new, or number of posts. Most of the time I filter by new anyway.

Are you stupid? There's no "upvote" in face-to-face conversations, either. It's a convenient feature to register your opinion and move on.
I don't care about upvotes either and wouldn't have a problem with them being gone. You can just filter based on traffic or new, and spam can be reported and dealt with directly by mods.
That's more or less how message boards worked for years before zoomer faggots decided everything needed to be a popularity contest.
